Summer Bridge FAQ

Frequently asked Questions

What is TRiO/SSS?
Student Success Services (SSS) is a federally funded TRiO program. SSS is dedicated to helping students develop the skills and motivation necessary to successfully pursue and earn a bachelor’s degree. Summer Bridge is one of the many services SSS provides to help students attain a bachelor’s degree. Most SSS services are provided at no cost to members, and students participate in SSS throughout their enrollment at Peru State College.

Who is eligible for Summer Bridge?
Summer Bridge is limited to SSS members. Federal eligibility regulations require members be U.S. citizens or qualify for federal financial aid and meet at least one of the following characteristics:

  • First generation college student (parents have not earned a 4-year bachelor’s degree)

Will you use my FAFSA for the taxable family income information?
Yes but your FAFSA uses “prior-prior” year data, or 2021 income for the 2023-2024 school year.  If you do not meet the income eligibility threshold with FAFSA data we can recheck using the 2021 taxable family income levels identified above.
What is the Cost to attend Summer Bridge?

  •  Summer Bridge participants only pay for the fees on the 1-credit course, approximately  $75.  All other costs are covered by the TRiO grant and Peru State College.  The fees are due as part of your fall bill.

When is Summer Bridge?

  • Summer Bridge -- August 11-17, 2023

Where do students live on campus?
Summer Bridge participants move into their assigned fall dorm room. Laundry facilities are available in the residence hall.  New freshmen approved to live off-campus can contact the SSS Director to see if Summer Bridge can work for them.

What about meals? Where do I eat?
Students will eat most meals in the Student Center dining hall. When the Summer Bridge class travels for cultural and academic enrichment events, special meals at various places will be provided. Costs of all cultural and academic event meals are provided by Student Success Services.

What is the Daily Schedule?
Students will have an interactive, interdisciplinary course encompassing college/life success skills. Students will also attend study sessions, workshops, and other cultural and academic activities. Your day will be full from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Participation in all activities is mandatory.

Can I work or have other outside commitments?
During Summer Bridge it will be very difficult for students to work or have other outside commitments. If you participate in Summer Bridge, you must commit fully to the Summer Bridge program.

Can I be part of Summer Bridge if I am an athlete in a fall sport?

Probably not.  If team activities begin before the start of the regular semester, they will likely be at the same time as Summer Bridge classes.  If your team doesn't have practices yet or you red-shirt this fall, talk with your coach about the possibility.

Can I leave Summer Bridge from time to time?
Students may leave for family emergencies. Exceptions will be made at the discretion of the SSS Director. Students will receive a calendar of events before the program begins and again upon arrival to campus. Please do not schedule work, medical appointments, family birthday parties, etc. during this time.

Will I earn credit for the Summer Bridge?
Yes!  Students will complete COLL 100 Elements of Personal Success (1 cr) during Summer Bridge and earn credit upon successful completion of the course.

Can I bring my car? Is parking available on campus?
Yes, parking is free during the Summer Bridge program in designated areas. However, Peru State College and SSS assume no responsibility or payment for parking violations, damage to, or loss from personal vehicles.
