Student Senate

Mission Statement:

Student Senate is the voice of the students for the students.

Vision Statement:

Student Senate will become an organization recognized as a positive change agent to enhance the student experience, fostering student leadership, equality, and achievement through engagement.

The Student Senate focuses on the interests and opinions of the students in regard to the operations of the College. Through involvement in a wide variety of campus affairs the Senate provides a means for students to participate in the formulation and application of institutional policy affecting academic and student services. From this participation, the Student Senate aims to express student views and interests to the administration, develop better educational standards, facilities, and teaching methods, and to foster the recognition of the rights and responsibilities of students to the school and community.

Qualifications

All Peru State College students, seeking membership to Peru State College Student Senate must not be on any type of probation. With the exclusion of freshman all students, must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at the end of the semester preceding the election and must be taking at least twelve (12) semester hours each semester at Peru State College.

Student Senate Petitions Available

President and Vice-President petitions are now available outside of the Student Organizations Office in the Student Center.  All petitions are due in the box outside the Student Organizations Office by 5 p.m. on the posted deadline.
  • According to Article 2, Section 1.2 of the Student Senate Constitution, all Peru State College students seeking to run for the office of President or Vice President must have completed at least 30 college credit hours (15 of which must be completed at Peru State College), these 30 hours must be completed prior to running for office. In addition candidates must have previously served at least one term or currently be serving a term on the Student Senate of Peru State College. Candidates must meet all requirements of Article I of this Constitution, complete all required paperwork including a petition signed by fifty students and the student identification number of the electors signing the petition.
  • Article 1 Requirements: All Peru State College students, seeking election to the Student Senate of Peru State College must not be on any type of probation.  All students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at the end of the semester preceding the election (excluding freshman), must be taking at least twelve semester hours each semester at Peru State College
Senator At Large petitions are now available outside of the Student Organizations Office in the Student Center.  All petitions are due in the box outside the Student Organizations Office by 5 p.m. on the posted deadline.
  • According to Article 1, Section 1.1 of the Student Senate Constitution, all Peru State College students, seeking election to the Student Senate of Peru State College must not be on any type of probation.  All students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at the end of the semester preceding the election (excluding freshman), must be taking at least twelve semester hours each semester at Peru State College, and complete all required paperwork including a petition containing twenty-five signatures and the student identification number of the electors of the vacant seat being elected. Only one petition is allowed per student per election.

Student Senate is seeking nominations for the Barb Lewellen, the Elaine Hanson, the Scroll of Service, and the Thomas Ediger awards. Descriptions of the awards and those eligible are listed below. Nominations are welcome from all Peru State College students, student organizations, faculty, staff, and administrators.

Nominations are to be submitted to the Student Senate Office using the linked web forms. Nominations must be in written form and include a short biography or reason why you believe the nominee should receive one of the distinguished awards. Student Senate will review the nominations and vote for the recipients. The winners will be announced during the Student Senate banquet in the spring.

The awards’ descriptions are as follows:

Barb Lewellen Award

This award is designed to honor an outstanding faculty, staff member, or administrator who has distinguished him or herself through the betterment of students and student life at Peru State College. The award is open to all part or full-time faculty, staff or administrators. An individual trophy will be presented to the winner. The recipient will also have their name engraved on the plaque, which is located in the entrance of the Student Center.

Elaine Hanson Award

This award distinguishes an individual (or individuals) who go above and beyond for the Peru State College Community while not actually being enrolled or employed by the institution. Nominees can be alumni, former faculty, staff, and administrators, Foundation members, city and regional leaders, or spouses of active or former faculty, staff, or administrators. Winners of this award show true dedication to the members of the Peru State College Community through their continued service to students and the institution and prove once more that the motto of “Once a Bobcat, Always a Bobcat” is more than simply a catchy slogan.

Scroll of Service Award

The Scroll of Service Award is the highest non-academic award that is given to a student at Peru State College. The Scroll of Service Award is designed to honor any current, full-time Peru State student for dedication and service to the student body and college (to qualify, a student must be enrolled for spring semester). The recipient will be presented with a plaque during the Student Senate banquet.

Thomas Ediger Award

This award is designed to honor an outstanding club or organization who has shown service above and beyond to the campus and its surrounding community.

Qualifications include:
- Must be an active club for at least one (1) year
- Recognized by Student Senate as a campus club/organization
(must have updated paperwork filed and hold regular meetings and elections)

Nominations may be submitted by any member or non-member, with the exception of students currently holding an Executive Position in the club/organization. A certificate will be given to each Advisor and the President and Vice President of the awarded organization. A plaque will reside in the Student Senate Office to commend the past and present winners.
