Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal thoughts, emotions, and behavior, and the social and biological processes related to that behavior.  The Psychology major prepares students for graduate study as well as for careers requiring strong critical thinking and human services skills.  As rates of mental illness increase, our society will continue to need competent, understanding professionals who can provide a variety of helping services.  Similarly, understanding the complex motivations underlying behavior is crucial for addressing important social problems and concerns.  Combating global climate change, reversing the obesity epidemic, decreasing smoking rates among teenagers, and increasing voting rates all rest on the possibility of behavioral change, and psychologists are behavioral change experts.
