Peru, Nebraska – Students from Rock Creek (KS) and Falls City Sacred Heart High Schools were recently recognized as the top winners in the Peru State College High School Juried Art Competition.

Caden Ebert, a senior from Rock Creek High School was the first-place winner in the annual competition. Ebert’s entry was a 3D work entitled “Vic Rattlehead.”

Placing second with his 2D work titled “Perfidious” was Cameron Nelson, also from Rock Creek. Nelson is a senior.

Ebert’s and Nelson’s instructor is Kyle Van Vogelpoel.

Earning third place was Carson Sells, a junior from Sacred Heart with his self-portrait. Receiving an honorable mention was London Nactigal, also from Sacred Heart. A junior, Nactigal’s work was titled “Change of Heart.”

Sells’ and Nactigal’s instructor is Christina Wertenberger.

The juried competition, which was under the direction of Peru State College’s art faculty, was open to all high school students. Each student was allowed to submit up to three submissions.

The categories included 2D work consisting of drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic design or photography and 3D work which included sculpture or ceramic pieces.

Ebert received a half-tuition scholarship valued at approximately $3,200 for winning the competition while Nelson and Sells earned $2,000 and $1,500 scholarships, respectively.

Members of the jury were Paul Fell, nationally recognized cartoonist from Lincoln and former Peru State College art faculty member, Susan Moore, assistant professor of fine art, and Ken Curtis, assistant professor of graphic design.

The art faculty annually hosts an art day in the fall and then the juried art competition each spring.

Moore had this to say about the event, “We had incredible artwork in a variety of mediums including metal working, printmaking, sculpture, painting, figure drawing, graphic design, photography, and more. Artworks were submitted by high school students of 9th-12th grade.” Continuing, she added, “This year we had the opportunity for our own PSC art majors to weigh in and vote for our honorable mention.“

Peru State College offers either Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts in art with options in K-12 art, fine arts or graphic design. Minors can be earned in 2-D Art, 3-D Art, or graphic design.
