Peru, Nebraska - The American Red Cross will host a blood drive on the Peru State Campus on Tuesday, November 2. The drive will be held in the Live Oak Room at the Student Center and run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

When you give blood, you help cancer patients, trauma patients, sickle cell patients, burn patients and patients with chronic diseases. There are two types of blood donations you can give at the drive, whole blood and power red.

According to their website at RedCrossBlood.org, "Whole blood is the most flexible type of donation. It can be transfused in its original form, or used to help multiple people when separated into its specific components of red cells, plasma and platelets."

"During a Power Red donation, you give a concentrated dose of red cells, the part of your blood used every day for those needing transfusions as part of their care. This type of donation uses an automated process that separates your red blood cells from the other blood components, and then safely and comfortably returns your plasma and platelets to you."

The Red Cross is currently going through a blood shortage, and needs donations, particularly Type O blood.

According to their website, "The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime."

To schedule an appointment to give, visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter PeruNE to schedule an appointment. Walk-in appointments will also be accepted.
