Peru, Nebraska – Dr. Kathi Nehls was awarded the Barb Lewellen Award by Student Senate. The Barb Lewellen Award honors outstanding members of Peru State College faculty or staff for their distinguished work to better the lives of students and student life on campus.

Jared Koelzer, president of student senate, explained Dr. Nehls’ history with the college, “Dr. Kathi Nehls has been an Assistant Professor of History at Peru State College since 2017 and specializes in in modern U.S. social and cultural history with emphases on the American West, Native Americans, as well as exploring topics related to the environment and gender history."

"Dr. Kathi Nehls is an advisor for the Peru State Social Science Club as well as the Phi Alpha Theta History Honors Society. She has also led students on educational trips exploring the Native American history in Nebraska in 2018. She also works collaboratively with the Brownville Historical Society and currently leads a project archiving items form the old Peru museum."

The Barb Lewellen Award is designed to honor an outstanding faculty, staff member, or administrator who has distinguished him or herself through the betterment of students and student life at Peru State College. The award is open to all part or full-time faculty, staff or administrators. An individual trophy will be presented to the winner. The recipient will also have their name engraved on the plaque, which is located in the entrance of the Student Center.

Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. The society seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by members in a variety of ways.
