Late August, four jurors from across the country met to judge the 2018 Architectural Portfolio. Peru State College received an award for its outstanding design on the W.N. Delzell Residence Hall addition and renovation.
This portfolio is a sourcebook for award-winning and outstanding education design and is published in the American School and University Magazine. It recognizes projects that exhibit clarity of concept, innovation and creativity in response to the specific of program, users, community and site.
W.N. Delzell Residence Hall is a 1939 Gothic style men’s residence hall with four floors, named after W.N. Delzell, a faculty member and Dean of Men at Peru State from 1905 to 1939. The entire building was renovated, including restrooms, residence hall rooms and common areas. The exterior building envelope has also been upgraded to meet the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code, and a new mechanical and electrical systems have been installed.
American School & University wrote, “Updating the interior finishes was crucial, but it also was important to the college to maintain the character of the building. An elevator and entry addition was designed to match the original building’s brick and stone detailing and provide accessibility for those with disabilities."
All rooms now include two desks with chairs, two three-drawer dressers, a closet, sink and mirror, and a set of bunkable extra-long twin beds. There’s also new sinks, cabinetry, paint, carpet, new windows and sound reduction between rooms.
The bathrooms are centrally located on each floor and have been completely remodeled. A new electrical system to accommodate information technology requirements and a new mechanical system which will incorporate a geothermal well field (for energy efficient heating and cooling) and enhanced security features.
The Great Hall is located on the first floor and is comfortably furnished with a big screen TV for entertainment. The basement level holds the Game Room which serves as a gathering point for students with a large projection screen, a pool table, ping pong table, and lounge furniture. Also located in the basement is a laundry facility and community kitchen.
The lounge areas are comfortable with new furnishings and wall-mounted flat screen TV’s. The Great Hall has had all of the woodwork refinished, flooring replaced, new lights and the original hanging fixtures have been modernized with new wiring and outfitted with LED Edison bulbs.
Behind the addition and renovation were Jackson-Jackson & Associates, Inc. (Architect); Eileen Korth, AIA (Principal Project Manager); F&B Constructors, Inc. (General Contractor); Cheryl Kiel, AIA (Project Architect); Alvine Engineering (Mechanical and Electrical Engineer); Kenneth D. Lathrum & Associates (Structural Engineer); R.W. Engineering & Surveying (Civil Engineer); I.E. Design Group (Interior Design) and Big Muddy Workshop (Landscape Architect).
The project covered 46,496 sq. ft. with 288 sq. ft. for space per student and was completed August 2017. A total of $7,276,500 was spent with a cost of $157 per square foot for the building that now has a capacity of 161 students.
