Peru, Nebraska – On November 26, special education students from local schools came together for the annual Career Challenge at Peru State College. The students with disabilities from sixth grade to age 21spent weeks practicing for the event and were then given the opportunity to showcase their learned life skills with some friendly competition.
Booths were set up to challenge the students to test their life skills and complete every day tasks, such as bagging groceries, stocking shelves and making beds. The event was facilitated by Peru State College students, rewarding the top three performers in each task with medals to recognize their accomplishments.
Approximately 40 Peru State teacher candidates volunteered for this event, facilitating each station, scoring competitors, providing assistance as needed, and celebrating student successes. When they were not competing, students were invited to participate in ten adaptive physical education activities directed by physical education majors and Dr. Frank Lynott, assistant professor of health, physical education and recreation.
Six area schools participated in this event including ESU 4, Johnson County Central, HTRS, Falls City, Southern High School, and Nebraska Center for the Education of Children Who are Blind or Visually Impaired.
Dr. Felicity Post, assistant professor of education, said “This event provides an opportunity for Peru State’s teacher candidates to work hands-on with students with disabilities and gain an appreciation and understanding of their unique sets of skills and culture.”
“Every year, I look forward to organizing this event as it is a celebration of abilities and a positive clash of cultures. I continue to be amazed by the hard work put forth by competitors and the passion with which they compete.”
