Peru, Nebraska – Peru State College’s chapter of Phi Epsilon Kappa was presented the Thomas Ediger Award by the Student Senate. The Thomas Ediger Award is designed to honor an outstanding club or organization who has shown service above and beyond to the campus and its surrounding community.
Bailey Kuhlman, president of Phi Epsilon Kappa, said, “When Phi Epsilon Kappa won the Thomas Ediger award, it was a true honor. It showed people on campus and around the community that Phi Epsilon Kappa does more than just workout together.”
Dr. Kyle Ryan, professor of kinesiology and PEK’s advisor, adds, “I’m incredibly proud of the members of Phi Epsilon Kappa as well as all those that take part in the activities that the club has to offer. Phi Epsilon Kappa strives to offer services to Peru State College students, faculty, staff, as well as members from the surrounding community, that would otherwise not be offered by the College.”
He continues, “I believe that the club serves to raise awareness of the sacrifice paid by those who protect this country and its way of life.”
Phi Epsilon Kappa is a national professional fraternity for persons engaged in or pursuing careers in physical education, health, recreation, dance, human performance, exercise science, sports medicine and sports management.
Phi Epsilon Kappa leads regular High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts and Women’s Only Weights (WOW). WOW was created close to a decade ago as a place where women can work out without worrying about being judged or feeling intimidated.
The student group hosted special workouts throughout the year to commemorate or recognize special events like September 11 and Veteran’s Day. PEK also sponsored “24 Hours for Tesla,” a fundraiser for a Peru State alum with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease). The event raised $3,800 for Tesla and her husband. The couple used the funds to make their home wheelchair accessible.
Phi Epsilon Kappa was honored on April 18th at the Student Senate Banquet.
