Peru, Nebraska- Outstanding alumni were recognized in for their outstanding professional achievements, commitment to community and support of Peru State College. Paul Fell, class of 1967, was recognized as the School of Arts and Sciences’ 2019 recipient of the Thousand Oaks Alumni Excellence Award.
Dr. Dan Hanson, president of Peru State College, said, “For the School of Arts and Sciences, we honor Paul Fell for his rich career as a political cartoonist and his unending support of Peru State College through the National Alumni Association.”

Paul Fell started drawing editorial cartoons as a freelancer while teaching high school art in Auburn, Nebraska. At one point before joining the former Lincoln (NE) Journal as editorial cartoonist, he was creating five cartoons a week for four different newspapers. During his years with the Journal, he self-syndicated his editorial cartoons to newspapers in the state of Nebraska, almost exclusively.
Fell began as a high school art teacher and coach, spent several years as an art professor at Peru State College, and was editorial cartoonist for the Lincoln Journal from 1984 to 1992. Since then he has operated his own freelance cartoon business in Lincoln where he creates humorous illustrations for a wide variety of clients.
Fell’s editorial cartoons have won a number of awards and appear regularly in several national publications. He is in demand as a speaker and draws caricatures at conventions, trade shows and receptions. His editorial cartoons are syndicated throughout North America by Artizans Syndicate and worldwide by CartoonStock. He creates a weekly cartoon for the Nebraska Press Association which is distributed statewide.
Paul Fell has also produced a number of cartoon books over the years ranging from collections about Nebraska’s weather, communities, and people, to a collection of his editorial cartoons titled “Bipartison Efforts and Other Mutations”. Fell has also served for several years as a lecturer in Art at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and at Peru State College and Southeast Community College in Lincoln.
Paul Fell and his wife Arlene have served as the co-chairs of the National Alumni Association Board of Directors since its inception and both volunteer on campus in a variety of capacities including welcoming students and parents during Welcome Week/Moving Day, participating in events and more. Fell also served as the guest Artist in Residence for the School of Arts and Sciences in 2017.
Lori Broady (School of Education), Jeff Greenwald (School of Professional Studies) and Marilyn Schlake (School of Graduate Studies) were also recipients of the Thousand Oaks Alumni Excellence Award.
