Peru, Nebraska – Mia King, Charles Kosmicki and Kylee Combs took home the top three prizes at Peru State Colleges third annual Art Day. The winners participated in a juried exhibition hung in the Peru State College Art Gallery.
For the exhibition, they were able to submit 3 pieces of artwork into the categories of drawing, painting, printmaking, graphic design, photography, and 3D (sculptures and ceramics). The competition was judged by nationally recognized cartoonist and former art faculty member, Paul Fell; Susan Moore, professor of fine art professor; and Miranda Pollock, professor of graphic design.
Susan Moore said, “Spring 2019 Art Day was a great success! Thanks to the hard work and involvement from our team of Art majors, Paul Fell and Logan Merz. This was a thrill to be involved in and wonderful opportunity to meet and work with some of our incoming art students. This was so much fun; I eagerly look forward to our next Art Day and the new workshops and new faces to come!”
The exhibition granted three scholarships for the winners. Third place receives a $1,500 scholarship, second receives a $2,000 scholarship and first receives a scholarship for 1/2 tuition.
Kylee Combs of Southern Public Schools in Wymore, Nebraska won third place.
Charles Kosmicki of Grand Island Northwest High School won second place.
Mia King of Platteview High School won first place.
Students from area high schools participated in workshops covering printmaking, 3D design, graphic design, and cartooning. Teachers participated in a professional workshop with instructional input, guided and independent practice; teacher-lead round-table for addressing standards, curriculum innovations, and assessment approaches.
