Peru, Nebraska – The Peru State College Social Science Club and Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society hosted lecture Dr. Patricia Loughlin, Professor of History at the University of Central Oklahoma, in celebration of Women’s History Month. Dr. Loughlin, a scholar in women’s and Native American History, presented about the work of Elizabeth Shepley Sargeant and her role in the founding of the Indian Arts Fund in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

 

Sargeant was part of a vibrant intellectual and activist community of writers, artists, and anthropologists in the southwest during the 1920s and 1930s. Sergeant’s network included Willa Cather, Mary Austin, Mabel Dodge Luhan, and Indian rights activist John Collier.

Loughlin specializes in the history of the American West, women’s history, and American Indian history. Her book, Hidden Treasures of the American West: Muriel H. Wright, Angie Debo and Alice Marriott, received the Outstanding Book on Oklahoma History from the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Director’s Award and Finalist in Nonfiction from the Oklahoma Center for the Book in 2006.

 

Loughlin also co-edited Main Street Oklahoma: An American Story with Linda Reese and coauthored Building Traditions, Educating Generations: A History of the University of Central Oklahoma with Bob Burke. Her latest book Angie Debo, Daughter of the Prairie, received the 2018 Oklahoma Book Award for children/young adult.

 

The Oklahoma Department of Libraries writes about Angie Debo, “Utilizing excerpts from the subject’s childhood diary, Loughlin provides an inspiring account of the life of Angie Debo, the first woman to receive a PhD in history from the University of Oklahoma.”

 

Loughlin serves on the board of directors of the Oklahoma Historical Society and participates as a scholar in the Oklahoma Humanities “Let’s Talk About It Oklahoma” book discussion program. She is a member of the Coalition for Western Women’s History and the Western History Association, and serves on the editorial board of the Western Historical Quarterly and the Chronicles of Oklahoma.
