Peru, Nebraska - Dr. Steven Dunbar, professor emeritus in mathematics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Dr. Kristin Pfabe, a professor of mathematics from Nebraska Wesleyan spoke on gerrymandering at Peru State College. The event was hosted by Peru State's Math Club (Alpha Mu Omega), the Social Science Club, Phi Alpha Theta and the Student Senate.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines gerrymander as " to divide or arrange (a territorial unit) into election districts in a way that gives one political party an unfair advantage."
History professor, Dr. Sarah Crook said, “As we approach the next election we all need to be mindful that in 31 states, including Nebraska, state legislators will have the opportunity to gerrymander new district lines. Those new lines will dictate elections for the next 10 years."
"Regardless of partisanship, if you favor fair and free elections, central to any democracy, then this is a topic that is crucial for all citizens to understand.”
Phi Alpha Theta
Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. PAT seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.
The Social Science Club is for students who are interested in the Social Sciences and related activities. It currently meets with PAT.

Alpha Mu Omega
Founded in the summer of 1927, Alpha Mu Omega is an honorary mathematics fraternity which aims to develop and promote interest in the study of mathematics. Students with an average of “C” or better in required courses for a major in mathematics and who have completed, or are enrolled in at least one mathematics course at the 200-level or above are eligible as members. Alpha Mu Omega oversees an annual math day competition on campus and members also participate in other campus wide events.

Student Senate
The Student Senate focuses on the interests and opinions of the students in regard to the operations of the College. Through involvement in a wide variety of campus affairs the Senate provides a means for students to participate in the formulation and application of institutional policy affecting academic and student services. From this participation, the Student Senate aims to express student views and interests to the administration, develop better educational standards, facilities, and teaching methods, and to foster the recognition of the rights and responsibilities of students to the school and community.
