Peru State College's Noah Temme, Elaine Hanson and Creative Dining help organize event.
Auburn, Nebraska - The BackPack Committee of Peru State College hosted its only fundraiser, “Empty Bowls”,
at the 4-H Building on the Nemaha County Fairgrounds, Monday, March 18th. The project
was chosen to combat food insecurity, a critical need in Nebraska.
Attendees were given an artisan-made pottery bowl as a symbol of their investment
in “filling” the bowls of students who may go hungry. They were also given the opportunity
to taste the area’s best soups and vote on their favorite.
Elaine Hanson, First Lady of Peru State College, reflected on the event, “The Empty Bowls Event was well attended and well support by the community, businesses,
restaurants and local artists.”
Noah Temme, Peru State student and 2018 Newman Civic Fellow, adds, "The Empty Bowls
event was amazing to help organize and the amount of support from the community was
equally amazing."
Hanson continues, “The BackPack Committee is grateful for the leadership and assistance
from Noah Temme, the Auburn High School FBLA and the Art Club. Attendees can be proud
of raising $8,600 that will support filling 35 backpacks for 70 children in the coming
year.”
Artists responsible for helping craft the evening’s pottery bowls are Peru State Grad,
Susan Sisco and her Mother, Down Under Pottery, Nancy Fairbanks and the Auburn High
School Art Club.
Seven establishments donated soup to the Empty Bowls special event.
Contributors are listed with their respective soup variety: Arbor Manor, chili; Auburn
Public Schools (APS), cheesy potato ham; El Portal Mexican Restaurant, tortilla; Nemaha
County Hospital, Italian wedding; Peru State College Creative Dining Services, loaded
baked potato; Pizza Hut, chicken noodle and Subway, broccoli cheese. Amigos donated
the chips.
