Peru, Nebraska - Officers from the Nebraska Department of Corrections visited campus on September
25 to showcase three of their specially trained K-9 units. The presentation was done
in conjunction with the criminal justice honor society, Kappa Omicron Rho, and featured
a Q&A and live demonstration. The event was held in T.J. Majors and was open to the wider Peru State
community.
The event was overseen by handler, Sergeant Lee Tinkler, who explained that the dogs
are trained in tracking narcotics, including drugs and alcohol. The dogs are rescue
animals who had been with the department for several years, Tinkler's own dog, Kaylee,
was twelve years old and preparing to retire.
Sergeant Lee Tinkler said, "I do this job, because it keeps people safe, it keeps the inmates safe, keeps the staff safe, and it keeps the public safe."
