Nashville Tennessee – Peru State’s Dr. Jacob Bartlett served on the international faculty for Harmony University, an educational conference for the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS). Bartlett was selected to teach courses in vocal pedagogy, music theory, rhythm and fundamentals of music.
Bartlett writes, “Joining this faculty was an honor, and a goal I have had since I first became a barbershopper and music educator.”
“It is amazing to join colleagues from around the world to spread the style of a capella and barbershop singing. It is wonderful when so many people from so many different lifestyles and careers can get together for one purpose – to sing and enjoy singing together.”
Bartlett concludes, “I cannot think of a more inclusive, fun, educational environment than Harmony University.”
The conference hosted more than 800 students and Bartlett instructed students from thirteen different countries. The students lived on the campus for a week, took a variety of classes in either general musicianship or barbershop/a capella music in particular.
BHS has more than 20,000 members from around the globe. Its mission of “Everyone in Harmony” has allowed access to full membership to women for the first time in the organization’s history, making way for women’s and mixed quartets and choruses to join the fray.
Dr. Bartlett’s previous barbershop experience involves taking Peru State’s Show Choir Prestige on a trip to Chicago for an a capella semester in 2018. He is the founder and director of the Nebraska Vocal Initiative, the former director of the Lincoln Continentals, former member of the American Barberboys, and several barbershop quartets, one of his groups achieved a district championship in 2016.
