Peru, Nebraska- Two Peru State students, Sara Granfors and Spencer Kerwin, and Dr. Jared Bartels, assistant professor of psychology, attended the 30th Annual Association for Psychological Science (APS) Convention in San Francisco, California.

Granfors writes, “This was the largest and most diverse psychology convention I’ve ever been to. The variety in research topics and the way each psychologist approached their hypothesis was amazing to see.”

Kerwin said, “This was my first time ever presenting at a Psychology convention. We were really excited to get the opportunity to share our findings in San Francisco with APS.”

Granfors (Seward, NE) and Kerwin (Omaha, NE) presented a poster entitled, “Revisiting the Stanford Prison Experiment, Again: Examining the Role of Demand Characteristics.”

Dr. Bartels writes, “Sara and Spencer played a significant role in designing the studies and collecting and analyzing the data for the poster we presented.”

During poster sessions, individuals use a visual medium to display their research information. This method allows audience members to view the research material and engage in discussions with the researchers.

Dr. Bartels continues, “One attendee who stopped by to talk with us about our work remarked that she would share it with her students and that Sara and Spencer should be proud of their efforts. I concur. Sara and Spencer did an exceptional job of representing Peru State College.”

Granfors adds, “When we presented our research, I was shocked at the level of interest other researchers showed in our work. To think that our research will be used in classrooms is extremely humbling.”

Dr. Bartels has attended previous APS Conventions, including an international convention in Amsterdam in 2015.

Granfors concludes, “I’m very grateful that I was given the opportunity to go to San Francisco and take part in the APS Convention this year. None of it would have happened if Dr. Bartels hadn’t taken Spencer and I under his wing freshman year. It has been a wild ride, and we appreciate everything he has done for us.”

In addition to poster sessions, APS Conventions also include workshops for attendees, keynote speakers, student socials, symposiums and special events.
