Lincoln - Peru State's Treyten "Trey" Nelson was awarded the Roy Smith Scholarship by the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Nelson was one of six individual scholarship winners announced.

The announcement reads, "All six scholarship winners will be honored at the chamber’s Nebraska Business Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony on Feb. 1 in Lincoln. Each scholarship winner will receive $2,500."

Nelson writes, "I would like to thank Roy A. Smith’s family and the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce for awarding me the Nebraska Business Hall of Fame Scholarship. This is a great honor and I feel truly blessed."

“The business community understands that while recognizing past accomplishments is important, we must also build our future to ensure strong business growth,” State Chamber President Barry Kennedy said. “The State Chamber is proud to honor these deserving young adults. They are tomorrow’s business leaders."

Nelson is a junior from Lincoln, majoring in business administration. He currently serves as Peru State's Student Senate President and has twice been nominated by Governor Ricketts to serve as the College's Student Trustee on the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees.

"I have always had a passion for business and strive to create new business opportunities in our great state," Nelson continues, "I started my first company last year and have been fortunate to have great professors at Peru State College to assist me in this venture and pursue my passions. "

Nelson says of his future plans, "The Nebraska Hall of Fame Scholarship will help me accomplish my goal of graduating with three majors in four years. After graduation I plan to stay in southeast Nebraska and continue my business ventures while striving to give back to the community that has given so much to me."

In 2017, Peru State College junior Amber Cook of Rock Port, Missouri also received the Roy Smith scholarship.  Cook will graduate in May 2018 with a major in Business Management, Computer Management and Information Systems with a minor in Organizational Leadership and Management.

Roy Smith was a car salesman and a longtime advocate for business in Nebraska and Omaha. He was named to the Omaha Business Hall of Fame and the Nebraska Business Hall of Fame.
