Peru, Nebraska– Following a snow day and canceled school, Omaha World-Herald Columnist Janice Gilmore’s visit to Peru State’s has been rescheduled. Gilmore will now speak on Tuesday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Student Center’s Live Oak Room.
Gilmore will visit campus to present “Diversity in Communication.” The presentation will be about how the words we choose to use in communication can build better futures. This event was originally scheduled as part of Peru State’s Diversity and Inclusion Awareness month and sponsored by the Council for Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion.

Born and raised in Omaha, Gilmore graduated from North High School. She earned both her bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in education administration from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Gilmore worked as first a teacher, then assistant principal and finally principal in the Omaha Public Schools system. Her career in education spanned 31 years.
She currently writes a column for the Omaha World-Herald. She also writes for an African-American lifestyle empowerment magazine called Revive!.
In addition to her columns, Gilmore has written a children’s book about Omaha and a book about grief for PULSE, a group assisting families of homicide victims.
Gilmore is a board member for Project Hope, African American Empowerment, Inc., and the Community Advisory Board of Bright Futures Foundation. She is also a is a member of the NAACP and Concerned and Caring Educators.
She has received several awards, including the College of Education University of Nebraska at Omaha Distinguished Alumni Award and the Omaha Schools Foundation Award.
