Peru, Nebraska- The Founding Fathers signed the United States Constitution in Philadelphia 231 years ago. Peru State’s Phi Alpha Theta celebrated the anniversary, Constitution Day, by hosting a competition among students and faculty members.

Students and faculty members were invited to create teams of one to three people. Each team took a short, ten-question quiz about the Constitution. The student and faculty teams who answered the most questions in the fastest time received prizes.

The winning student team members were Bailey Bitz (Ravenna, NE), Andrea Jackson (Franklin, NE), and Danni Harder (Beatrice, NE). They each received a $25 Casey’s gift card. The winning staff team members were Adam Neveau, director of residence life, and Sergio Portesan, assistant director of residence life. They each had a “constitutional” breakfast delivered to their office by Phi Alpha Theta members.

Dr. Sara Crook, a faculty advisor for Phi Alpha Theta, said, “Constitution Day provides us with a grand opportunity to reflect on a document that has served us well for 229 years. Although not a perfect document, as Hamilton predicted, we have amended & adapted through the years.”

“Despite whatever issues that may divide us, the United States stills remains a model of democracy. It is important that as citizens we know how our system works so that it truly can be a representative democracy. ”

Peru State’s Phi Alpha Theta chapter is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians.
