Peru, Nebraska – Four student members of Alpha Mu Omega attended the Nebraska Southeast South Dakota Spring 2018 Section Meeting held in April. The Peru State students were escorted by Dr. Laura McCauley, assistant professor of mathematics, and Cassandra Cox, instructor of mathematics.
McCauley presented “Spot It! with Combinatorics” at the conference. Her presentation focused on how graph theory could be used to explain the mechanics of the game design.
McCauley said the presentation was well-received with many well-wishers expressing interest in sharing her ideas with their own classes.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Michael Dorff, the next president of the Mathematics Association of America. He is also a professor of mathematics and the department chair at Brigham Young University.
Dorff gave two keynote presentations, the first on careers in mathematics and other STEM careers. The second was about mathematics in film and other video.
He writes, “What’s your favorite movie? Star Wars? Avatar? The Avengers? Frozen? What do these and all the highest earning Hollywood movies since 2000 have in common? Mathematics!”
Alpha Mu Omega was founded as the Peru State College honorary mathematics fraternity in 1927. It seeks to develop and promote interest in the study of mathematics. Students with an average of “C” or better in required courses for a major in mathematics and who have completed, or are enrolled in at least one mathematics course at the 200-level or above are eligible as members. Alpha Mu Omega oversees an annual math day competition on campus and members also participate in other campus-wide events.
