Peru, Nebraska- The #IamPeruState team sat down with Marisa Pribnow, a golfer and member of Student
Senate at Peru State, to listen to her accomplishments throughout her college career.
Pribnow is a senior at Peru State, studying for her Secondary English Education Major
with an endorsement in coaching. She is from Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated high
school from Pius X.
While searching for colleges, Pribnow began losing hope of finding a college that
would work for her. Peru State was one of the last places she visited.
Pribnow says, “I was kind of getting down in the dumps because I hadn’t found a college
yet. I visited Peru, and it just felt like home. All the faculty and staff on campus
are so welcoming. Of course, the affordability is just outstanding. And I’ve been
able to do everything I’m interested in.”
"Do Everything"
On campus, Pribnow is the Recording Secretary on the Executive Board of the Student
Senate. For four years, Pribnow has been a part of the Student Athletic Advisory Council
and has acted as their Communications Director for the past two years. Pribnow writes
for the Peru State Times, she's served as a Student Ambassador as a Resident Advisor
in Morgan Hall.
Pribnow is also known for her accomplishments on the women’s golf team. Currently,
she holds the 18-hold record with a 74, which is two points over par. She has also
won the same tournament back-to-back. The women’s golf team had one of the lowest
team scores this year too.
"An Incredible Honor"
Last year, along with hundreds of other student athletes from colleges around the
country, Pribnow was nominated for the Wooden Cup. Named after basketball coach John
Wooden, the Wooden Cup recognizes collegiate student athletes who display excellent
character on and off the field and have been successful academically and athletically.
Colleges choose one student from the school’s entire population for the award.
Three out of the 24 finalist athletes came from small colleges, including Marisa Pribnow.
She felt incredibly honored to be Peru State’s one nomination and to be included in
an award where student athletes from division one colleges were honored as well.
“To be recognized for who you are as a person and as a student athlete is just an
incredible honor. I am one hundred percent humbled that I was chosen, and to think
that Peru State nominated me for that—so I can wear that name on my back and represent
them so well,” Pribnow says.
Future Plans
Since she will be done taking classes in May, Pribnow will student teach in the fall.
In January, after her December graduation, Pribnow plans to take a paraprofessional
job at a public school. Then Pribnow wants to begin working next fall in a Nebraska
school system, particularly LPS or OPS, to teach high school English.
As a kid, Pribnow dreamed of playing professional golf, but she knows that isn’t always
possible. She hopes to golf throughout her life by joining lady leagues and coaching
high school golf.
