Peru, Nebraska – Dr. Gul Ahmad, associate professor of biology at Peru State College, has been invited to serve as the Lead Guest Editor for a special issue of the Journal of Tropical Medicine.   The special issue, to be published in January 2018, will focus on helminth infections in humans and animals.

Ahmad writes, “As the Lead Guest Editor, my main responsibilities are inviting additional guest editors, writing a call for papers in consultation with those guest editors and coordinating incoming submitted manuscripts so the manuscripts can be sent for peer review.”

“I will also be working with my guest editors to co-author an editorial as an opening to this special issue.”

Ahmad’s selected guest editors are Dr. Syed M.A. Abidi of A.M. University in Aligarh, India, and Dr. Workineh Torben of Tulane University in Covington, Louisiana.

The call for papers for the January 2018 issue reads, “Helminths are . . . parasites infecting various organs of human and domestic and wild animals and account for significant rates of and death.”

“Estimates indicate that about one-third of the human population is infected with one or more helminthic parasites. The level of infestation is equally common among animals.”

“Despite several decades of research, we have limited understanding about the basic mechanism of immune evasion to ultimately be able to develop effective vaccines or therapeutic approaches against helminthic diseases.”
