Peru, Nebraska- Peru State College hosted Convocation for more than 230 new students today in the
Al Wheeler Activities Center. Faculty and staff also attended the Convocation.
New students were grouped by their intended major – from psychology to English – and
seated together with faculty from their College 101 courses. Each attending student
also received a commemorative coin. The coin features “Class of 2021” on one side
and the College seal on the other.
Speakers included the President of Peru State College, Dr. Dan Hanson; the Vice President
of Academic Affairs, Dr. Timothy Borchers; the President of the Student Senate, Treyten
Nelson; President of the Faculty Senate, Dr. Mary Goebel-Lundholm; and Peru State
alumna, Connie Edmond.
Dr. Borchers greeted the students with reminder their time at Peru State has a goal,
“May 8, 2021 is a date you all should have marked in your calendars. That’s the date
we will meet back here in the Al Wheeler Activity Center, in a very similar setting,
to celebrate your graduation from Peru State College.”
“Today we are making a formal commitment to each other to achieve that goal of graduation.”
Dr. Hanson welcomed the freshmen to campus, adding, “Last week I told you stories
about three previous students and they had three things in common:” they organized
their time, they said yes to opportunities and they got to know the faculty and staff
here at Peru State.
“These students worked with faculty and found their passion. I encourage you to make
those connections to better find your own passions.”
Treyten Nelson said, “Investing your time on campus clubs and other activities is one of the best ways to be successful in college.”
“Bolster your resume. Have fun.”
Dr. Mary Goebel-Lundholm added, “Be certain to expand your breadth and depth of knowledge!
Challenge yourself with classes you would not normally take.”
Edmond began her address with a story about her first visit to Peru State despite
being enrolled at another university, “I went home that night and told my parents
I’m in love with Peru and I want to go to college there.”
Connie Edmond is a 1987 graduate of Peru State College where she majored in accounting
and business administration. She served fourteen years as an auditor with the Nebraska
State Department of Revenue before becoming a managing partner at WRL CPA in Lincoln.

There were faculty members, staff and administrators that wanted to assist me. They
wanted to invest in me. They wanted to know my dreams and what I wanted to be. They
wanted to know how I was doing my first week away from home.”
“I found an amazing support system at Peru State.”
“Today, I found an amazing support system looking to invest their time and energy
in you.”
Peru State College plans to hold Convocation next year for the class of 2022.
