Peru, Nebraska – The Peru State College Charter Day Subcommittee has announced a slate of activities
for children during the June 20 celebration. Parents are invited to register at www.peru.edu/150.
Jason Hogue, director of marketing and communications, writes, “The June 20 events
for children will focus on the one-room schoolhouse experience. Our young visitors
will learn what school was like in 1867: what games were played, what the students
ate for lunch and what was taught.”
“They’ll get a chance to see how things have changed – but also how they have stayed
the same. It should be a fun, educational day at Peru State!

The day will begin at 11:15 a.m. when children will receive period clothes like suspenders,
aprons and hats. This will be followed by a traditional schoolhouse start to the day
with a flag salute, patriotic song and scripture reading.
Lunch will be served at noon. Students will be served corn bread, cheese, jam sandwiches,
fruit, vegetables and cookies.
At 12:30 p.m. a rotation of classes will begin for elementary students. Classes include
handwriting; a spelling bee; music; Nebraska Art sponsored by 4-H; ice cream cranking;
games (Drop the Handkerchief, Hide and Seek, Blind Man’s Bluff and Who Has the Button?);
and a discussion of how classroom rules have changed.
Middle school students will learn about famous Nebraskans. Their activities include
interactive handouts and painting a landscape painting.
Classroom time will end at 4:30 p.m. for a snack and music rehearsal. The rehearsal
will prepare students for a 5:00 p.m. concert during the evening registration.
A lecture series and other activities planned for June 20 will be announced shortly.
