Peru, Nebraska- The Hispanic Latino Student Association, Black Student Union, Kappa Omicron Rho, Peru Disc Golfers Association and the American Red Cross Club are sponsoring a food drive to benefit local food banks. This food drive will start on October 19th and run until November 14th.

Donation boxes will be placed in building around the Peru State College campus. Some of these boxes have already appeared in campus buildings.

Dr. Frank Lynott, assistant professor of education and advisor to the Hispanic Latino Student Association, writes, “Last year’s drive netted over 125 pounds of food and we hope to shatter this record in 2016.”

Kristi Nies, assistant professor of English and advisor to the Black Student Union, adds that the organizations involved include students from all three schools (Arts and Sciences, Education and Professional Studies) and is a campus-wide effort.

Lynott continues with praise for so many “diverse organizations working together for an inclusive goal.”

Peru State College has added student engagement with community and regional needs as a main plank in its strategic plan. Student involvement in service and regional activities is cited as a best practice for their retention in college, their success in college and their career success.
