Peru, Nebraska- The Hispanic Latino Student Association, Black Student Union, Kappa Omicron Rho, Peru Disc Golfers Association and the American Red Cross Club sponsored a food drive to benefit local food banks. The food drive raised more than 220 pounds of food.

All the food raised will be donated to the Southeast Nebraska Communication Action Council (SENCA). SENCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting, developing, and operating any and all community action programs in the region.

Donation boxes were be placed in building around the Peru State College campus. Students, faculty and staff contributed to the food drive.

In October, Dr. Frank Lynott, assistant professor of education and advisor to the Hispanic Latino Student Association, writes, “Last year’s drive netted over 125 pounds of food and we hope to shatter this record in 2016.”

This year’s 220 pounds exceeds that record.

Kristi Nies, assistant professor of English and advisor to the Black Student Union, adds that the organizations involved include students from all three schools (Arts and Sciences, Education and Professional Studies) and was a campus-wide effort.

Lynott continues with praise for the efforts, “HLSA, BSU, KOR, PDGA and ARCC thank you for your support in helping the estimated 46.5 million people who face “food-insecurity” in our nation.

Peru State College has added student engagement with community and regional needs as a main plank in its strategic plan. Student involvement in service and regional activities is cited as a best practice for their retention in college, their success in college and their career success.
