Peru, Nebraska- Peru State College professor of mathematics, Paul Hinrichs, received the Milton M.
Beckmann Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented by the Nebraska Association
of Teachers of Mathematics (NATM) in special recognition for a career of outstanding
contributions of mathematics education in the State of Nebraska.
Hinrichs said, “I am deeply honored to receive this award from my colleagues in mathematics
education."
The NATM website provides “The NATM board established the life-time achievement award
in 1989. Its purpose is to honor outstanding mathematics educators who have spent
a lifetime working on the improvement of mathematics education in the state of Nebraska.”
The website provides five criteria for consideration. Candidates must “have devoted
a career to the improvement of mathematics education in the state of Nebraska and
demonstrated leadership in the promotion of mathematics as a science and a field of
study.”

Dr. Tim Borchers, vice president of Peru State College, said, “Dr. Hinrichs has a
long reputation for being an excellent teacher and has prepared many current math
educators. It’s a great tribute to him to receive this award and recognition.”
Milton M. Beckmann was a longtime professor of mathematics at the University of Nebraska
in Lincoln. He is most famous for his research into teaching students struggling in
mathematics.
Hinrichs is cited for demonstrating outstanding teaching and leadership in the development
of teaching strategies and technology for the teaching of mathematics. Candidates
for the award also had to be members of the NATM and the National Council of Teachers
of Mathematics.
The mission of the Nebraska Association of Teachers of Mathematics is to enhance the
teaching and learning of mathematics by fostering professionalism, cultivating leadership
and facilitating communication among educators. The NATM is an affiliate of the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
