Peru State unveils a new historical marker.
Peru, Nebraska- Peru State College unveiled a new historical marker on March 17, 2016.
The new historical marker is located between the A.V. Larson Building and the Little
Red Schoolhouse.
The previous historical marker was erected in 1967 and read, “During its first one
hundred years, Peru State College expanded to a campus of one hundred acres dotted
with twenty academic buildings and housing complexes to accommodate an enrollment
of more than 1,100 students.”
Peru State College will be celebrating its 150th anniversary on June 20, 2017 and
has an enrollment of 2,500 students. Sesquicentennial events are planned throughout
2017 including spring commencement, June 20 and homecoming.
Speakers at the event included the chancellor of the Nebraska State College System,
Stan Carpenter; the president of Peru State College, Dr. Dan Hanson; professor of
history and Phi Alpha Theta co-advisor, Dr. Sarah Crook; and current student and Phi
Alpha Theta President, Michelle Kaiser.
Chancellor Carpenter spoke to the crowd of about a hundred that Peru State College
and its sister schools have played an important role in the development of Nebraska.
He finished by reminding us that Peru State College has an equally important role
to play in Nebraska’s next 150 years.
Fundraising for both historical markers was undertaken by the history honors society,
Phi Alpha Theta. Phi Alpha Theta is still raising funds for the marker and invites
you to attend a Murder Mystery Dinner.
Dr. Sarah Crook writes, “The theme this year is “Murder at the Deadwood Saloon” and
will involve a western-themed meal, recognition for costumes, fake money to be used
for bribery, chocolate poker chips, and lots of fun.”
The Murder Mystery Dinner is being held on April 8 and 9 at 6 PM in the Jindra Fine
Arts Building. Each night will be limited to thirty tickets at a cost of $55 or
