Peru, Nebraska- The musical and theatrical production of “Ain’t I A Woman” will be peformed at Peru State College on March 2, 2016.  The production will feature Core Ensemble in the Peru State College Theatre at 7:00 p.m.

This chamber music theatre performance highlights one actress accompanied by a musical trio (cello, piano & percussion).  The work celebrates the lives and times of four significant African American Women: ex-slave and fiery abolitionist Sojourner Truth, renowned novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, exuberant folk artist Clementine Hunter and fervent civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer.

Dr. Sara Crook, professor at Peru State, said, “’Ain’t I A Woman’ is the perfect segue between Black History Month and Women’s History Month.  I hope everyone can join us as we explore the legacy of four of America’s most brilliant and influential black women.”

The written work is by Kim Hines. The musical score is drawn from the heartfelt spirituals of the Deep South, the urban exuberance of the Jazz Age and concert music by African American composers including Diane Monroe.

The event is funded by a number of campus and community partners.  Campus partners include the Student Senate, Phi Alpha Theta, Black Student Union, Peru Theatre Company and the School of Arts and Sciences.  Community partners include the Nebraska Arts Council, Humanities Nebraska and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment for Arts and Humanities.
