Peru, Nebraska- Peru State College senior, Devin Edds, attended the Great Plain Student Psychology
Convention at the University of Nebraska in Kearney. Edds presentation, “The Dark
Side of Conscientiousness,” took second place in Undergraduate Empirical Oral Presentations.
Edds's presentation examined the combined effects of conscientiousness and perfectionism
on well-being. As the title of the presentation suggests, there can be a down side
to conscientiousness.
Dr. Kelli Gardner, associate professor of psychology, wrote, “Generally, conscientiousness
is considered a positive trait, and perfectionism is considered a negative trait,
but some people are high in both - hence the need for this research.”
Edds writes, "This past year my research project has taught me that the real life
process of conducting research in the field of psychology is much more messy and confusing
than a textbook could ever teach you, but that it is equally rewarding and powerful
to get to create your own study and see your personal ideas coming to life.”
Edds continues, “I found some very interesting things about the connections between
the concepts of conscientiousness, perfectionism and well-being that I would love
to share with anyone who's got the time to listen."
Gardner continued, “Devin did a wonderful job sharing her project, making me very
proud and making Peru State College look good!”
Edds is a psychology major and developed the presentation as part of Honors Psychology
499. HP 499 is an independent study course some students take as part of their Honors
Program at Peru State College.
