First day of class is August 22, Convocation held August 23

Peru, Nebraska- College students are set to return to the region as Peru State gears up for the 2016-2017 school year. The first day of class will be August 22.

Football and volleyball practices began last week as students return in waves. Student-athletes arrived on campus early to prepare for the upcoming season.

Ted Harshbarger, associate athletic director and sports information director, said, “Over 130 football players and 22 volleyball players began practice this past week in preparation for the upcoming 2016 fall seasons. Both teams have had inter-squad scrimmages.”

“The volleyball team’s season begins Friday when they participate in the Bethel College Pilot Invitational in Mishawaka, Ind. They play two games of Friday and Saturday.”

“The football team will be traveling to Crete on Thursday and will scrimmage with the pre-season ninth-ranked Doane College Tigers.”

The volleyball team’s first home game is August 26 at 1 p.m. versus York College during the Peru State Fall Classic tournament. The volleyball teams also plays at 7 p.m. that night against Mayville State University. The football team’s first game is September 3 at 6 p.m. versus Evangel University.

A few more students will arrive late this week to prepare for roles as Resident Assistants, Ambassadors and TopCats. Resident Assistants are peer leaders who help supervise the residence halls. Ambassadors work for the Admissions Office to provide a student perspective to potential students. Top Cats are student leaders during New Student Weekend.

Students living on campus can move into their residence halls on Friday, August 19. New students received their roommate assignments over the summer and a list of essential items.

Returning student, Amanda Burk, wrote a list of 10 Dos and Don’ts of Freshman Year at Peru State College for Odyssey.com, “Do bring good walking shoes. Because Peru is on the bluffs of the Missouri river, the town is much more hilly than you would expect.”

Welcome Week runs from Friday, August 19 to Thursday, August 25. Highlights include a bonfire, a hypnotist performance and a comedian.

Shelley Hartman, student activity coordinator, said “We’ve got a great slate of activities lined up for Welcome Week!  Let’s get ready for college and have some fun!”

Classes begin on Monday, August 22. On-campus students are not the only ones starting.

The Dean of Professional Studies and Director of Distance Education and Online Services, Dr. Greg Galardi, writes, “The online learners at Peru State College officially begin class on August 22, 2016.

However, to assist students in understanding how classes are taught and the accompanying requirements, our Distance Education division opens all first 8 week and 16 week online classes on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 8:00 a.m.”

“This allows students to review the classes in which they are enrolled, analyze the impact of the time it will take to complete weekly work, and then make a decision as to whether they wish to stay in the class or find an alternate class.”

Convocation will return to Peru State College this year with a ceremony on August 23. The formal ceremony to welcome new students is open to friends and alumni of the college.

Dr. Tim Borchers, vice president of academic affairs, said, “Convocation will introduce the freshman class to the college’s faculty and advisers. It is an important part of a student’s transition to college life.

After a full week of activities, students will be invited to the Gabus Family Presidential Suite for a reception on August 25. The “Welcome Back” reception will give students a chance to connect with the President, Dr. Dan Hanson, and other college personnel.
