Request an Item (Interlibrary Loan)PatronsFacultyLactation Room
What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loan is the borrowing of items (e.g. books, articles) that we do not own from a library that does own it.

What can be requested?
Books

Anything can be requested except archival materials, rare books, and bound or unbound journals. However, each lending library decides what materials they will lend. For example, many libraries do not lend new books or DVDs for 6 months to a year.

Cost

cost icon

It is a free service for members of the PSC community.

If you are a distance student and request a physical item that needs to be mailed to you, you will have the cost of paying to return the item to the PSC Library.

Patrons who aren’t a PSC student, alumnus, or employee may also use this service for a fee of $6 per item to cover mailing and processing.

Physical Items - Due Dates and Renewals

Lending libraries determine the due date of their physical items. If you need an item beyond the due date, contact us so we may request a renewal for it, which may or may not be approved by the lending library. Try to use the item within the initial checkout period to avoid the possibility of a renewal being denied.

Physical items can be picked up at the front desk and returned there or at the outside dropbox.

Mailing Physical Items

Mail icon

We will mail physical items requested through interlibrary loan and those that we own to our patrons. The receiver of the item is responsible for the item if lost in the mail and for paying to ship it back to us.

An alternative is to use your local library to request physical items. This will not only save you shipping costs but will also get the item to you sooner by eliminating the delivery time between the PSC Library and you.

How to submit a request?

When using a library database, you may select the link to “request item.” Enter your contact information and then submit the request. The library will receive your request and process it.

If you have a citation, you may fill out a form at the front desk or contact the library with the information.

Contact the library as soon as possible if you need to cancel a request.

Time

Articles may take 2-3 business days.

Physical items may take 7-14 days to arrive depending on the location of the lending library and the U.S. Postal Service.

Physical items may not be requested during the last two weeks of each semester because they may not arrive before the end of the semester.

Where do I start searching?

You can start searching by using a search box on the library’s homepage or by selecting a specific database either on a Research Guide or under the Find/Search left-hand navigation link.

Find Articles

Use the “Everything” search box or the “Article” search box on the library’s homepage to search all databases except those provided by NexisUni, ProQuest, and FirstSearch. To search those databases, use their direct links.

You can find subject specific databases under the Find/Search navigation link and on Research Guides.

To find scholarly journal articles, check the limit results box for “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals”, “Peer reviewed”, or “Scholarly journals” when you search. You will retrieve only journal articles.

Items on Reserve

Ask for items on reserve at the front desk. Provide your professor’s name and the title of the reserve material you wish to use. The material will be checked out to you. The check out time is determined by your professor.

Study Rooms

The four library study rooms (2 on the Main Floor and 2 on the Curriculum Level) are available on a first come, first served basis. The study rooms have viewing and listening equipment if you need to watch a DVD or VHS or listen to a CD.

The archives room on the Main Floor is also available on a first come, first served basis. However, you may be interrupted if archival materials are needed.

Off-campus Access

You will be prompted to log in with your myPSC login information when you attempt to access any password-protected resources or sources.

If your login doesn’t work, try resetting your password through TrueYou. Contact the Library if you need further assistance.

Find Books

Use the “Book & eBooks” search box on the library’s homepage or the Library Catalog. Since we share our catalog with Wayne State College and Chadron State College, you can also search their collections.

Checkout and Renew Library Materials

To check out, bring the materials to the front desk with your library card/PSC ID. Books check out for 3 weeks; DVDs and CDs for 1 week.  DVDs and reserved items accrue a fine of $.25-$1.00 per day (or hour) depending on their checkout length.

To renew, contact the library or log into your library account through the Library Catalog.

All library materials may be checked out except periodicals and reference books.

Materials may be returned inside at the front desk or outside at the dropbox beside the back entrance to the library from the parking lot.

Library Catalog Account

After you register for a library card, you will have access to your account through the Library Catalog.

In your account, you may view your checked out items and renew them.

You may also request items that are checked out and be placed on the hold list for them as well as request items owned by Wayne State College or Chadron State College. You will be notified when the items are available for pick up at the front desk.

Because of contract agreements, eBooks cannot be shared between libraries.

Link to Library Databases and Articles

To link to library databases and articles, you need to add https://peru.idm.oclc.org/login?url= in front of the URL. This directs the link to go through the library’s password protection system, which allows access to off-campus students.

Reserves

The library can place purchased items from the library collection and from your personal library on reserve without permission from the copyright owner.

Reproduced or copied materials that are not in the public domain must have the permission of the copyright owner before being placed on reserve. This includes video tapes and DVDs that are recordings of televised programs. An alternative to placing copies on reserve is putting the entire book or periodical on reserve.

Copyright permission must also be granted for electronic copies. Alternatives to posting the complete electronic copy are post the link to the full text article or provide a citation to have your students locate the full text.

Renewing items requested through interlibrary loan must be approved by the lending library. Contact us and we will ask for a renewal for you.

Recommendations for Purchases

Contact Veronica Meier, Library Director, if you have a recommendation for a purchase.

One-time purchases such as books, DVDs, and eBooks will be considered with regards to the current budget.

Purchase of titles in eBook format depends on if it is available through the library’s eBook vendors. Some publishers will not sell their eBooks to libraries and the cost of eBooks for libraries may be six times the consumer price.

Annual subscriptions for periodicals and databases will be considered for the next budget year since they require a continuous commitment in the budget with yearly increases in cost.

Access to the Library’s break room is available for women who need to express breast milk and/or breastfeed while on campus.

Available during Library hours except 11:45am-2pm Monday-Friday and an hour before the Library closes.

Clean, secure, and private room with:

  • comfortable seating
  • electrical outlets near chairs
  • microwave for sterilizing
  • sink with hot and cold water
  • refrigerator to store breast milk while on campus (remove daily)

You must bring all supplies (e.g. breast pump, storage bags, and cleaning supplies) that you may need.
