What is interlibrary loan?

Interlibrary loan is a service that the library provides to PSC students, alumni, faculty, and employees. It is the borrowing of items (e.g. books, articles) that we do not own from a library that does own it.

Users who aren’t associated with PSC may also use this service for a fee of $6 per item to cover mailing and processing.

Interlibrary Loan Process

What can be requested?

Anything can be requested except course materials available at the Bobcat Bookstore, archival materials, rare books, and bound or unbound journals. Each lending library decides what materials they will lend. For example, many libraries do not lend new books or DVDs for 6 months to a year.

What does it cost?

It is a free service for members of the PSC community. The library pays the cost of requesting items and, if necessary, shipping them back to the lending library.

If you are a distance student and request a physical item that needs to be mailed to you, you will have the cost of paying to return the item to the PSC Library.

For non-PSC users, we ask for $6 per item to help cover costs.

How do I request items (e.g. articles and books)?

If you are searching a library database such as those provided by EBSCO, ProQuest, or FirstSearch, you may select the link to “request item.” Enter your contact information and then submit the request. The library will receive your request electronically.

If you have a citation, you may fill out a form at the front desk or contact the library with the information.

What do I enter for a library card number if I don't have one with the PSC Library?

If you don’t have a PSC library card number, enter your NUID.

How do I cancel a request?

Contact the library as soon as possible if you need to cancel a request. We may be able to cancel it before it is processed and charged for requesting it and, if relevant, shipping it.

How long does it take for an item to arrive?

Physical items may take 7-14 days to arrive depending on the location of the lending library and the US Postal Service. Articles may take 2-3 business days if sent electronically.

Physical items may not be requested the week before Finals of each semester because the item may not arrive before the end of the semester.

How long can a physical item be borrowed?

Due dates depend on the lending library. If you need an item beyond the due date, contact the PSC Library so we may request a renewal for it, which may or may not be approved by the lending library. Try to use the item within the initial checkout period to avoid the possibility of a renewal being denied.

Please return items by their due date to keep the PSC Library in good standing with the lending library.

Can items be renewed?

Renewal of items depend on the lending library. If you need to renew an item, contact the PSC Library and we will request a renewal which may be accepted or rejected by the lending library. However, try to use the item within the initial checkout period to avoid the possibility of a renewal being denied.

Where do I pick up requested items?

Physical items can be picked up at the front desk and returned there or at the outside dropbox. Electronic items will be emailed to the account you provide.

What if I need a physical item mailed to me?

The library will mail physical items requested through interlibrary loan and those that we own. Keep in mind that you are responsible for the item if it is lost in the mail and for paying to ship it back to the library.

An alternative is to use your local library to request physical items. This will not only save you shipping costs but will also get the item to you sooner by eliminating the delivery time between the PSC Library and you.
