CORRECTIONS LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Corrections Leadership Scholarship Program provides scholarships to Peru State Criminal Justice students who are completing a degree while working at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) during the school year and summer. The goal of the program is to develop students to become leaders as employees in the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.
Peru State students accepted into the program will receive $12,500 per academic year, which will be divided equally between the fall and spring terms and applied to the students’ accounts. Such funds may be used towards tuition, fees, books, room, and board. Students are responsible for any remaining balances on their accounts and all other associated fees, charges, books and expenses.
There is an additional $2,500 housing allowance available for the summer, in addition to pay received for hours worked at TSCI.

Work part time at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution while earning credits towards your Criminal Justice degree. You will be paid hourly for your time worked at the institution.
- Be 18 years of age or older or reach 18 years of age prior to beginning employment at TSCI.
- Have a valid driver’s license.
- Currently attend or be a graduate of an accredited senior high school or received an equivalent of a high school diploma.
- Pass a criminal background check conducted by the Nebraska Department of Corrections, the Corrections Office Behavioral Assessment, pre-employment medical exam and a drug test.
- Fully online students are not eligible for the program.
Where is TSCI?
The Tecumseh State Correctional Institution is located in Tecumseh, Nebraska. The prison is 36 miles west of Peru State College and 55 miles southeast of Lincoln, NE.
What is TSCI?
TSCI is a Tecumseh State Correctional Institution is a mixed custody facility that houses medium, maximum and Death Row inmates. This facility is responsible for housing all Death Row inmates prior to their execution being carried out at Nebraska State Penitentiary. Offenders incarcerated at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution can take educational courses to earn a GED, gain an adult basic education and even participate in college correspondence courses. Inmates may receive substance abuse treatment and participate in parenting courses. Tecumseh State Correctional Institution offers vocational training in laundry, carpentry, and maintenance.
Is training provided to students in the program?
Prior to employment at TSCI, all students must complete the Staff Training Academy (STA) in Lincoln. For new first-time students, this will typically take place in the summer after their first year.
What are the requirements for employment at TSCI?
As an employee of TSCI, a student is subject to the same policies and procedures of any NDCS employee, including disciplinary action up to and including termination. Employee disciplinary action is within the discretion of TSCI.
Will students need to work full-time at TSCI?
After their first year, students will work 12-24 hours per week during the academic year and will not be allowed to work full-time during the academic year. Summer employment could be full-time. Transfer students may be eligible to work at TSCI in their first year, after they have received NDCS training.
Are students paid for their work at TSCI?
Students participating in the program will be paid by TSCI for hours worked at TSCI.
There will be an interview with staff from the College as well as TSCI. Decisions will be made based on academic achievement indicative of the ability to succeed in the program and having a commitment to work in the Corrections field in Nebraska. A high school or transfer GPA of 2.5 is recommended for admission.
Students must maintain full-time enrollment status (12 credits per semester), continue enrollment in the Criminal Justice program, maintain a 2.0 GPA, and be eligible for continued employment at TSCI. Any student whose employment is terminated by TSCI or is no longer eligible for employment with TSCI, will be removed from the Program and will no longer be eligible for any Corrections Leadership Scholarship Program Student Incentives, effective at the end of the term in which the termination occurs.
