Contest Event Details
Schools are invited to enter up to eight students in each event. Individual students
may enter up to three events. Exceptions are Job Interview and Keyboarding.
In the Job Interview event, available time schedules limit the number of students
we can accommodate. Schools may enter first and second choice students. First choice
students are placed on the schedule, second choice students are placed if time slots
are available. To accommodate scheduling, Job Interview students may participate in
only one other event.
Participation in the keyboarding event is limited by the number of computers available.
Schools may enter two students.
Students are not allowed to enter events in which they received 1st through 5th placements in the previous years' events. A student who competed in an event but
did not place is welcome to enter. If students take more than one test, they may take
a five-minute break between tests but must complete all tests before leaving the building.
Students may not take a specific exam more than once on a contest day.
Students will have up to one hour to take each test. Students must pay attention to
their own test time, there are no time announcements. Winners will be determined by
the highest score. In the event of a tie, the student finishing with the earliest
time will be declared the winner.
Students will use one Scantron score sheet for each objective test. On the back of
each student's name badge there will be a peel off label with the student's name,
school and test information. The test supervisor will place the label on the Scantron
sheet and mark the start time for the exam.
Accounting
The accurate keeping of financial records is an everyday activity in all types of
business. This event is designed to measure understanding and skill in basic accounting
procedures. All student participants must be previously or currently enrolled in high
school accounting.
The objective test may include accounting terminology, the work sheet, income statement,
balance sheet, trial balance, account classification, posting, bank reconciliation,
and employee/employer payroll entries.
Students may bring a calculator. Cell-phone calculator apps are not allowed.
Advanced Accounting
Knowledge of accounting procedures is essential in preparing for a career in business.
This event is designed to provide recognition for students who have an understanding
of the basic principles of accounting and who give evidence of their knowledge in
solving practical business and accounting problems. A participant in Advanced Accounting
should have completed at least one year of accounting.
The objective test will include in-depth problems on the basic principles of accounting
and all accounting cycles. The questions may pertain to accounting terminology, the
work sheet, income statement, balance sheet, trial balance, account classification,
journalizing, posting, income tax, payroll, bad debts, accrued income and expenses,
notes, inventory controls, and corporation accounting.
Students may bring a calculator. Cell-phone calculator apps are not allowed.
Business Communications
Business communication plays an important part in today’s workplace. This contest
is designed to test the ability of students to handle office tasks likely to be assigned,
communicate ethically and effectively in a widely-diverse environment, work as team
players, to think critically, and use advanced technology to facilitate productive
communication. It is recommended that the participant be currently enrolled in or
have completed a course in Business Communications.
An objective test will be administered. The test will cover materials similar to what
you find in any high school business communications textbook.
Business Ethics
Business ethics describes the application of ethical values reflected in the values,
practices and policies made by the decision makers on behalf of their organizations.
This contest is designed to measure participant understanding of business ethics.

Business Law
An understanding of Business Law plays an important part in the daily lives of all
business people as well as all other citizens. The contest is designed to test participant
understanding of law as it applies to business. It is recommended that the participant
be currently enrolled in or have completed a course in Business Law.
The objective test may include questions on citizens’ rights, court systems, contracts,
agency, bailment, torts, property, and other topics.
Business Math
Business Math is necessary for personal use as well as business use. This event will
cover the fundamental principles and operations of financial problems faced by every
individual in his/her daily life. It is recommended that the participant be currently
enrolled in or have completed a course in Business Math.
Students may bring a calculator. Cell-phone calculator apps are not allowed. Scratch
paper will be furnished for calculations.
Computer Concepts
Computer concepts are essential skills in business. The contest is designed to test
the understanding the participant has of computer concepts as they apply to business.
Students should have a good understanding and working knowledge of Microsoft Office
– Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. It is recommended that the participant be currently
enrolled in or have completed a course in Computer Concepts.
The objective test may include questions regarding the computer, system hardware,
and both system and application software.
Economics
A basic understanding of our economic system and how it affects each citizen is necessary
to understand and live in our society. This contest is designed to test that understanding.
It is recommended that the participant be currently enrolled in or have completed
a course in Economics.
The objective test will include questions on our economic system, how goods and services
are produced, how prices are determined, the use of money and credit, governments
and their costs, the economy and its growth, market structures, and basic econometrics,
etc.
Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurs play a vital role in business and understanding the role of an entrepreneur
is important in any economy. This test is designed to assess the student’s general
understanding of those economic opportunities and the skills needed for success. It
is recommended that the participant be currently enrolled in or have completed a course
in entrepreneurship.
An objective test will be administered. The test will cover materials similar to what
you find in any high school entrepreneurship textbook.
Introduction to Business
Statistics indicate that nearly every citizen will be involved in starting, buying,
managing, or investing in a business at some point in their lives. Consequently, every
citizen needs a broad understanding of business in today’s society. This contest is
designed to test participant understanding of contemporary business activities, concepts,
and practices. It is recommended that the participant be currently enrolled in or
have completed a course in Introduction to Business.
An objective test will be administered.
Job Interview
This contest is designed to allow students the opportunity to write a letter of application,
prepare a resume, and experience a simulated interview with a professional interviewer.
The resume must reflect current status in high school and current status of work experience.
Three references with complete addresses are required.

The cover letter and resume must be submitted prior to contest day.
A formal interview lasting approximately 10 minutes will be conducted.
The top interviewees will be re-interviewed by a panel of interviewers to determine
rank.

Keyboarding (skills)
Business today requires highly qualified keyboarding and proofreading skills. This
event is designed to measure a student’s 3-minute keyboarding speed and accuracy.
Participation in the keyboarding event is limited by computers available. Schools
may enter two students.
Contestants will type on PC Platform computers using Microsoft Word. Two, 3-minute
tests will be typed from two separate manuscripts. Winning timings will be the fastest
speed with the fewest errors. Timings with more than three errors will not be scored.
Prior to the first scored timing, students will be given one 3-minute warm-up timing
similar to the actual contest timing. This will provide students with the opportunity
to become familiar with the equipment, the testing procedure, etc.
Students participating in the keyboarding event will find room location and time information
on their student name badge.
Marketing
A basic understanding of marketing principles and how to apply them is essential in
the business world today to sell either products or ideas. This test is designed to
test student understanding. It is recommended that the participant be currently enrolled
in or have completed a course in Marketing.
An objective test will be administered. The test will cover materials similar to what
you find in any high school marketing textbook.
Personal Finance
A basic understanding of Personal Finance is essential if one wishes to function effectively
in today’s world. Understanding how to make choices in the areas of personal insurance,
banking, home ownership, and taxes, to mention a few areas, is required to be financially
successful. It is recommended that the participant be currently enrolled in or have
completed a course in Personal Finance.
An objective test will be administered. The test will cover materials similar to what
you find in any high school personal finance textbook.

Web Design
Much of today's business success can be attributed to the role of the World Wide Web
in business operations. The Web Design contest will test knowledge about both basic
HTML, CSS and general Web page design concepts. It is recommended that the participant
be currently enrolled in or have completed a course in Web Page Design.
The objective test may include questions about current trends in Web page design,
historic events and persons in Web page design, HTML, CSS, and XHTML knowledge.
Word Processing
Business today requires high vocational competencies. This event is designed to measure
knowledge of the production of all types of business forms, letters and mail merge,
memos, tables, reports (including statistical) and email messages.
An objective test will be administered. The test will cover materials similar to what
you would find in any high school word processing textbook and student laboratory
materials.
