About Ben E. Johnson, Ph.D
Nebraska State College System Professor of Leadership and Interdisciplinary Studies
The following is probably much more than you want to know about me, but some of you may find it of interest.
I have been instructing college students, teaching critical thinking, developing college courses and programs, and guiding academic institutions through financially challenging times for over 35years. Although most people know me primarily as a college educator, during this same period an entrepreneurial streak in my personality has kept me involved in a variety of businesses, starting them, buying them, running them, "fixing" them, and selling them for a profit. These businesses range from the one employee business to the hundred employee business, including retail, service, and manufacturing businesses. I was even the CEO of a rather large 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit education foundation for a fewyears. Occasionally in my classes some of these businesses will be used as examples, both good and bad.
I received my bachelor’s degree in Religious Education and Humanities from William Tyndale College. I followed this with two masters degrees from Eastern Michigan University: the first in History and Social Sciences, the second in English. My interdisciplinary Ph.D. is from University of South Floridain Curriculum and Instruction.
First as a college instructor, then as a faculty member with increasing administrative responsibilities, I served in private colleges, community colleges, and universities mostly in the Midwest. My academic titles and experience have ranged from instructor to tenured professor; from department chair to vice president and dean of faculty; from holder of an endowed faculty chair to dean of a university graduate school. There was even a ten-year period (1976-1986) when I was a full-time learning skills consultant to colleges interested in establishing learning assistance centers and increasing recruitment and retention. For four years (1992-1996) I was CEO and fund raiser for public education as Executive Direction of The Education Foundation of Florida. For nine years (1999-2008) I served as President of Peru State College, Nebraska’s oldest college. As of August 2008 I retired as President and moved to a fulltime online faculty professorship. I am now the Nebraska State College System Online Professor of Leadership and Interdisciplinary Studies. I now make my home in Florida on the Gulf Coast.
Along with being a very hands on administrator while President of PSC, I am proud of several things. I am a frequent public speaker, researcher and writer, currently with 17 published books in 30 editions, and over 50 published articles. I have been very active in college fund raising. My fund raising efforts on behalf of Peru State College over the past several years have resulted in over $35 million dollars being given for campus construction and renovation projects and consequently we have a truly great campus. In 2006 I received the Nebraska Community Builders Award for my contributions to economic development in Nebraska. In 2007 I received the Nebraska Distinguished Leadership award.
I enjoy fishing, painting, and cooking. Loving family and friends occasionally remind me that these three areas need a bit more work.
And that is about it. I told you that this might be more than you really wanted to know.
