Bio:

Dr. Elina Ibrayeva is a Professor of Business and Economics at the School of Professional Studies, having joined Peru State College in the Fall of 2011.  She earned a PhD in Management from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1999.  In her dissertation, she studied entrepreneurship in economies transitioning from communism to capitalism, concentrating on the role of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and other individual characteristics in business creation.  She served as a contributor  to “Culture, Leadership, and Organizations: The GLOBE Study of 62 Societies,” as edited by

Dr. Robert House and received a 2005 M. Scott Myers Award for Applied Research in the Workplace given by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).

Before studying at the University of Nebraska, Dr. Ibrayeva was an associate professor at the Kazakh National State University in Almaty, Kazakhstan.  Having grown up in Kazakhstan, she was fascinated by US culture, democracy, and businesses – which motivated her interest in the differences between centrally planned and market economies.  She earned her first PhD degree in Political Economy from the Kazakh National State University in 1989.  In 1993, Dr. Ibrayeva studied in the Executive Entrepreneurship Program at the Maastricht School of Management in Netherlands.

Dr. Ibrayeva was one of the first Kazakh scholars selected as a Fulbright Scholar and traveled to study in the United States in 1994.

In 2010, Dr. Ibrayeva married a Nebraska Cornhuskers fan, who inspired her to relocate from Minnesota to Nebraska.  She had been teaching graduate and undergraduate classes at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota, for twelve years, having developed an international management concentration for the management program at SMSU.  Intrigued by the potential of internet to supplement and improve student experience, she has taught online classes for over a decade.  Some of courses she taught included ECON 470 International Business and Economics, MNGT 440 International Management, MKTG 471 International Marketing, and MBA 603 Organizational and Managerial Behavior.  Dr. Ibrayeva also enjoyed volunteering as an instructor for Senior College at SMSU, a non-credit educational program for seniors in Southwest Minnesota.

As an instructor, Dr. Ibrayeva emphasizes interconnections between multiple disciplines (business, economics, history, cultural studies) and connects theory and current business events.  In her online classes, she seeks to build a learning community where students learn not only from the textbook and teacher, but also from each other.

Dr. Ibrayeva loves visiting arts and history museums  and has visited a museum in almost every city she’s  traveled to, including Philadelphia, Boston, Washington D. C., Chicago, Seattle, Minneapolis, Denver, Toronto, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Brussels, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, and Osaka.
