Bio:

Dr. Devaney worked in the Criminal Justice field in three states prior to accepting a position as an assistant professor at Peru State College.  He worked for three different agencies in Tennessee; Social Counselor with the Department of Human Services in child and adult protective services and foster care, Probation Officer 3 and Case Manager with the Department of Youth Development, and Intensive Supervision Probation Officer with the Department of Corrections for 7 years.  He taught Criminal Justice and served as Chair of the Criminal Justice Department at Pensacola Christian College in Florida for 11 years.  He was a Probation Officer in Virginia with the Department of Juvenile Justice for 2 years and has taught undergraduate and graduate classes in Criminal Justice online for 2 years, prior to his move to Nebraska.  Other work experiences include Retail Loss Prevention and Security, County Sheriff’s Deputy (corrections), and Master at Arms (Police/Security) with the U. S. Naval Reserve.

 

Dr. Devaney’s main area of expertise is community corrections and Criminal Justice education.  He enjoys working with young people and served as an internship mentor while a Probation Officer in Tennessee.  He is married and the father of five, ranging in age from 6 months to 20 years old.

Research Interests:

Dr. Devaney’s research interests include issues in juvenile delinquency, community corrections, cultural factors in crime and delinquency, youth substance abuse in rural communities, counseling and treatment models for incarcerated youth, and crime theory. 

 

His doctoral dissertation was titled “Probation Officers’ Orientations Toward Control and Assistance Functions of Community Supervision.”  His MSCJ research was titled “A Study of Sentencing Differences for Juvenile Offenders Based on Gender.”
