Searcy, Arkansas – The Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society has named the Peru State College chapter of Alpha Chi a Notable Chapter for the 2014-2015 academic year. Fewer than 3 percent of Alpha Chi chapters across the nation received this honor.

Dr. Bill Clemente, advisor for the Peru State chapter, wrote, “The award is certainly a thrill and testament to Peru State College’s commitment to academic excellence.”

Alpha Chi is a coeducational academic honor society. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of juniors, seniors and graduate students at colleges and universities that have a chapter of Alpha Chi.

Trisha Yarbrough, Executive Director of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society, writes, “This award recognizes your institution’s important role in Alpha Chi and its support for the scholarly ideals of the society.”

Alpha Chi’s distinction required the Peru State chapter to induct new members, file an annual report and significantly participate in national Alpha Chi activities. Peru State’s chapter added more than 40 news members and attended the national convention held in Chicago where KT Umland of Harbine, Nebraska and Astrid Moore of Bayan Lepas, Penang in Malaysia gave student presentations.

During the national convention, Dr. Clemente was elected to a second term as the Vice-President of the national organization. Peru State College alumni Reuben Ironhorse-Kent was also honored as the 2015 Distinguished Alumni for the national organization.

Ironhorse-Kent is an enrolled member of the Iowa tribe and has been featured in several art books. His work has appeared at the Smithsonian American Indian Art Museum, the Heritage Museum at Pine Ridge, South Dakota and the Southern Plains Indian Museum.

Since 1922 Alpha Chi’s purpose has been to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. Alpha Chi has more than 300 chapters and an active presence in almost every state.
