(Peru, Neb.) Peru State College is inviting residents of southeast Nebraska to attend a screening of the HBO documentary The Weight of the Nation at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4 in the College Theatre. The event, which is being sponsored by the Peru Student Education Association, is free and open to the public.
The screening will be followed by an open session where attendees can ask questions and discuss options that Peru residents have available to them for proper nutrition and exercise.
Childcare with structured activities for children ages 5 and up will be provided by Peru State elementary education majors in the Al Wheeler Activity Center beginning at 6:45 p.m. and lasting through the end of the screening and discussion.
Associate Professor of Education and Human Performance Lab Coordinator Dr. Kyle Ryan said, “While obesity rates have begun to level off in urban areas, they continue to rise in rural communities. We hope people from across southeast Nebraska will join us to learn more about the causes of this epidemic and what each individual can do to combat it.”
The documentary is a presentation of HBO and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.
