PSC Teacher Candidates Host "Brain Quest" Math Day for Area Third Graders
(Peru, Neb.) Peru State College (PSC) Elementary/Middle Grades Math Methods students recently teamed up with local community volunteers to give 193 third grade students from Auburn, Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer, Johnson-Brock, Falls City, and Rockport, Mo., a day of Brain Quest math fun.
Education Instructor and Brain Quest Advisor Gina Bittner said, “The Spring 2011 Brain Quest event marked our 10th consecutive semester of hosting this fun, hands-on math experience. Peru State teacher candidates planned and executed a great event that left participants cheering and full of energy for math! More than 1,179 area third graders have now had an opportunity to participate and we look forward to bringing many more to campus in the years to come.”
PSC teacher candidates were divided into small groups where they tackled specific math standards, teaching math concepts in fun, engaging, hands-on, interdisciplinary ways. Each group developed a unique name, activities and materials for their sessions.
Some examples of the students’ math lessons included the Measurement Olympics, the Brain Quest Market for budgeting and grocery shopping, and What's Your Problem?, a game where students divided up in two teams to solve mathematical problems Jeopardy-style.
