Peru State Student Education Group, Advisor Earn Awards at Statewide Delegate Assembly

(Peru, Neb.) The Peru State College Education Association (PSEA) was recently awarded the 2009-2010 Local Chapter Excellence Award by the Student Education Association of Nebraska (SEAN) at the organization’s 2010 Delegate Assembly in Lincoln. The group’s advisor, Assistant Professor of Education Dr. Judith Ruskamp, took top honors at the assembly when she was named the 2009-2010 SEAN Chapter Advisor of the Year.

PSEA was also given the Outstanding Newsletter Award. Megan Brown, a freshman special education and early childhood education major from Syracuse and editor of the PSEA Newsletter, was named the 2010-2011 SEAN underclassman representative and will represent PSEA on the Executive Committee during the next academic year.

Ruskamp said, “We are proud to have PSEA excel as a local student education association at the state level every year. Our members continue to strive to provide opportunities for innovation, creativity, and engagement with educational activities and issues in the profession. It would not happen without committed and motivated leadership in the organization. We appreciate the Student Education Association of Nebraska’s acknowledgement of our work on the Peru State campus and in the larger community to implement and support innovative educational opportunities that make vital contributions to the future of southeast Nebraska and the state.”

Each year PSEA sponsors several community outreach efforts, one of which is hosting more than 1,200 Head Start and K-4th grade students from a dozen area schools at the annual Dr. Seuss Birthday Party and Celebration. The event is held in conjunction with Read Across America Week and is intended to help children develop a love for reading. This year’s birthday party was featured in the April issue of the Nebraska State Education Association’s Voice Magazine, which is available at
