When a teacher is ready to add endorsement area(s) to his/her Nebraska certificate, the first step is to examine Peru State College’s programs. Each program and its progress sheet may be found at http://www.peru.edu/education/TEducAdvising.htm.
The courses on the main/first page of all endorsements are offered either as hybrids (combination of 1-2 meetings and the rest online), online, during the day/evening at Peru, or as evening/night classes the Annex which is just south of Bellevue. The courses at the Offutt Annex are 2 nights a week for 8 weeks. Online and most hybrids are 8 weeks long, while courses on the main campus, practicum courses, and the SPED 430 hybrid are 16 weeks long. No program may be completed entirely online.
The middle grades progress sheet has two pages with the second one showing the choices for the two areas of concentration. The elementary education progress sheet also has two pages with the second page showing the elementary content knowledge courses. Many of those particular content courses on the second page need to be either taken at Peru or "covered" with preapproved substitutes from other institutions.
A teacher adding endorsement(s) may request to complete the practicum hours and student teaching on the job. At that time the Director of Field Experiences will confirm that the teacher is teaching full time in that endorsement area/level in a school accredited or approved by the Nebraska Department of Education.
For those who believe the programs will work for them, the next step is to go online at www.peru.edu and apply for Admission. It is free and relatively simple. The status should indicate that he/she is a post-graduate student seeking to add an endorsement. The Admissions Office will request that official transcript(s) are submitted to Peru State College. When the file is complete, the Admissions office will send it to the Certification Officer for a transcript audit. That audit will indicate which courses have already been covered with previous degrees/classes. The Admissions Office will then set up a telephone advising appointment so the Certification Officer can help with course registration.
