Tutoring
 

Peru State offers free tutoring through the following venues:

 

The Multi-Subject Walk-In Tutoring Lab, the Writing and Speaking Lab are open now. Click on the headings below to view the schedules. Grammarly.com is available for writing support year-round.

 

Purpose:

Peer tutors provide walk-in tutoring for high-demand freshman-

and sophomore-level courses

Location:

CATS Main Floor

Hours:

Mon – Thurs, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., depending on tutor availability (check schedule above)

Procedure:

No appointment necessary. Just drop in. Click on the link above to view the schedule and see the course list for each walk-in tutor.

 

 

Purpose:

A professional tutor assists students of all disciplines with conducting research, writing papers, and preparing presentations

  Hours:

Tues, Wed.and Thurs., 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

and 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.

  Procedure:

Just drop in (in person or virtually) or, if you prefer, make an appointment (see contact info above).

 

The Writing and Speaking Lab has computers and reference manuals available, so students can work on assignments there and have access to tutorial support when they have questions. The lab also has a private video room where students can record themselves practicing speeches and/or engaging in mock interviews for self-critique and, if desired, feedback from tutors.

Distance Tutoring for Online-only Students
 

Purpose:

To provide tutorial assistance in high-demand freshman- and sophomore-level courses for students who cannot come to campus (Not available to students taking one or more classes on campus)

  Procedure:

Distance tutoring is conducted via Skype, phone, and/or e-mail correspondence. For some courses, online whiteboard technology will soon be available. To request a tutor, fill out the Distance Tutoring Request form.

  In-Class Tutoring for ENG 100 and MATH 100
 

Purpose:

Peer tutors enhance classroom instruction by helping students individually and in small groups
  Location: CATS 015 and/or CATS 201, depending on the classroom assignment for the course
  Hours: During scheduled class times
  Contact: Students can contact the course instructor for details
  Procedure: Peer tutors pay attention to what the students are being taught and circulate about the room when appropriate to work with students under the supervision of the class instructor.
Individualized Tutoring for Students with Qualifying Disabilities
 

Purpose:

To provide necessary accommodations
  Location: CATS or other public meeting areas
  Hours: Arranged
  Procedure:

Provide Ms. Marie Meland with documentation of disability and find out whether tutoring is determined to be a necessary and reasonable accommodation.

 

Tutor-facilitated Group Study
 

Purpose:

To provide tutorial assistance to student-formed study groups
  Location: Public meeting areas agreed upon by the tutor and the study group
  Hours: Times agreed upon by the tutor and the study group
  Procedure:

Get together a minimum of 2 students, figure out what times you

can be available, and contact Ms. Marie Meland to request a tutor

Evening groups meet on the main floor of the library, unless otherwise agreed upon. Tutors will leave 15 minutes after the posted start time if no group members have arrived.

PSC Tutors will not do work for students, but will instead assist with learning concepts, rules, and/or strategies. The peer tutors are students who have been recommended by professors. Computerized Tutorial Programs Provided by Peru State College

 

Grammarly Online Writing Review

 

This online computerized program scans writing and provides feedback on potential errors. Peru State students can create accounts using their campus email addresses. Go to http://www.grammarly.com/edu/students/ to log in, retreive a password, or set up a new account. Then just paste your writing into the window, send it for feedback, and see how useful this program can be!

 

Grammarly also offers the following free services:

  • Grammarly Handbook: " a virtual grammar handbook that describes various grammatical rules and offers examples of correct and incorrect use"
  • Grammarly Answers: " a free service where users can ask and answer any question related to English grammar and writing"

The CATS has the following computerized tutorial programs available:

  • Intelligent Tutor (interactive math tutorial for a wide range of courses -- free installation disks available upon request)
  • Merit Software (programs for a variety of subjects on computers in the Writing and Speaking Lab, CATS 208)
