Peru State College provides a structured advising program to help students on academic probation succeed in their courses and achieve good academic standing. A probation advisor in the CATS provides guidance and access to services, facilitates input from instructors regarding course progress, and serves as an academic consultant throughout the semester. To continue at Peru State College, students who are placed on academic probation must agree to the terms of an Academic Probation Contract — which include but are not limited to enrollment restrictions with a maximum of 13 credits for the semester. Click here to fill out a probation contract.
Students who are on academic probation and fail to meet the requirements of the Academic Probation Contract may be subject to administrative drop or withdrawal.
Conditions Leading to Academic Probation
The following conditions result in academic probation:
- Having attempted 21 credit hours or fewer (excluding transfer credits) and having a cumulative grade point average below 1.00 at the close of a semester (See 21-Hour Rule below)
- Having attempted more than 21 hours (excluding transfer credits) and having a cumulative grade point average of 1.00-1.99 at the close of a semester
- Entering PSC on provisional admission (usually due to a transfer grade point average below 2.0)
Probationary students must obtain a minimum 2.0 average for each successive semester of attendance (continued probation) until the required cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher has been achieved. Failure to do so will result in academic suspension.
Interim Academic Probation
Beginning in fall of 2012, Freshmen who score below the minimum expected level on any component of the freshman College Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP), an assessment battery administered as a part of the COLL 101 course, will be placed on interim academic probation for the remainder of the ongoing semester. Students on interim academic probation will be required to participate in tutoring (either peer tutoring or working with a computerized tutorial program) for a minimum of 4 hours per week. (Note: Do not use the interim contract form for spring 2012 probation contracts. Instead, use one of the links in the first two paragraphs on this page.)

Suspension
As noted above, probationary students must obtain a minimum 2.0 average for each successive semester of attendance (continued probation) until the required cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher has been achieved. Failure to do so will result in academic suspension.
Students who have attempted 22 semester hours or more, excluding transfer hours, and have a cumulative grade point average below 1.00 at the end of a semester are suspended, whether or not they have previously been on academic probation.
Academic suspension is for a period lasting two (2) semesters. Summer session is not a semester; therefore, suspension includes any summer session that falls within one calendar year following the effective date of suspension.
A student who has been placed on academic suspension has the right to appeal the suspension by sending a letter or email to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Todd Drew. The degree to which the student has complied with the terms of the Academic Probation Contract will factor into the deliberation of an appeal.
If a student wishes to return to Peru State College after serving a first academic suspension, the student must apply for readmission. To be considered for readmission following any subsequent academic suspensions, the student must petition the Faculty Senate.
How to Prepare a Degree Completion Plan
Having a plan for what classes to take when can help students stay focused on their long-term goals and keep their day-to-day challenges in perspective. Having a course enrollment plan also makes meeting with academic advisors much more beneficial. Click the link above for guidance on preparing an enrollment plan toward completion of your academic program.
