What the CAAP Is and Why You Need to Know:
The CAAP is a standardized test battery designed to assess college-level competency in areas related to general studies. Peru State College administers the CAAP during the freshmen and senior years to assess group trends, identify areas for institutional improvement, and identify individual students needing special academic intervention. PSC uses five CAAP tests: Writing, Mathematics, Reading, Critical Thinking, and Science. Each test is multiple-choice and is 40-minutes long. There is no registration fee.
Senior CAAP testing is a graduation requirement: all seniors must participate in the CAAP or, if eligible based on place of residence, an approved alternative assessment within the 12 months prior to degree completion. Note that baccalaureate-track students who already hold baccalaureate degrees are classified as fifth-year post-graduate students, not as seniors, and are exempt from the senior CAAP testing requirement.
Minimum Score Expectations
Minimum score expectations for the CAAP and other approved standardized assessments are based on standard deviations below national comparison-group means. The purpose of establishing minimum scores is to identify students with gaps in preparation and provide services to help redress the related knowledge and skills and build the framework for future academic and career success. Freshmen who score below minimum expectations are encouraged to engage in tutorials. Seniors who score below minimum expectations are required to successfully complete related modules in the General Studies Proficiency Seminar to be eligible for graduation.
PSC's CAAP Policy:
Freshmen attending classes on campus are required to sit for the CAAP as part of the COLL 101 Introduction to Collegiate Education course. Freshmen who score significantly below the national freshman mean in any of the CAAP tests will be placed on academic probation and referred to college personnel to design a personal education plan.
Senior participation in the CAAP is a graduation requirement.* Typically students sit for the CAAP during the last semester of the senior year. Requests for earlier testing should be directed to the Director of Assessment and Success in the Center for Achievement and Transition Services. Seniors who score significantly below the national senior mean on any component test will not graduate until they successfully complete a subject-specific seminar for each area of deficiency.
* Seniors sit for the CAAP as a stand-alone graduation requirement; however, seniors living outside a 100-mile radius of the Peru campus have the option of substituting an alternative assessment administered by the College or (at their own expense) the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), Law School Admission Test (LSAT), Miller’s Analogies Test (MAT), or Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT).
Signing Up for the CAAP :
To sign up, please email Dr. Waln your first and last name, your NUID, your expected graduation date, and which session you plan to attend (See schedules below). Enrollment in individual sessions is not capped, but a limited number of test batteries are ordered based on expected attendance. Therefore, advance sign-up is strongly recommended.
Important: If you have a documented disability for which testing accommodations have been approved, please mention this when you sign up.

Seniors Living Outside the Testing Radius:

The boundaries beyond which alternative assessments are approved are based on geographic radius, not driving distance. The map above shows the boundaries of the 100-mile radius from the Peru campus. Click on the map to view a larger image.
Acceptable substitutes for those seniors residing outside the radius include:
It is recommended that distance students planning to pursue post-graduate studies select an assessment that will also support their post-graduate entrance applications. Substitution of assessments not listed above must be approved in advance by Dr. Waln. All fees associated with substituting a standardized assessment are the responsibility of the student. Scores should be sent to Dr. Ursula Waln, Peru State College, P.O. Box 10, Peru, NE 68421.
* The General Studies Proficiency Seminar is the "alternative assessment administered by the College." Because it consists of mini-lessons and quizzes as well as five tests, the General Studies Proficiency Seminar takes more time to complete than does sitting for a standardized assessment but provides the benefit of a general-studies content review and is free of charge. Seniors outside the mandatory testing radius who choose to complete the General Studies Proficiency Seminar should email Dr. Waln to request access. Please include your first and last name, your NUID, and your expected graduation date in your email.
