Turnovers lead to later field goal as Peru State falls to Buena Vista

Bobcat FootballStorm Lake, IA - Peru State’s Curtis Thompson throws two touchdowns as the Bobcats were defeated 16-14 by the Buena Vista Beavers on a late field goal Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (1-2) scored with 2:33 in the first quarter to take an early 7-0 lead. Curtis Thompson hit Quentin Edelman for a 10 yard touchdown to cap off a 14 play, 57 yard drive. Buena Vista (1-1) would answer at the 10:46 mark in the second quarter to tie the game up at 7-7. The Cats would regain the lead with 5:07 remaining in the first half as Curtis Thompson hooked up with Cody Wallinger for a seven yard touchdown to move the score to 14-7 Peru State. The second score took the Bobcats only four plays to go 21 yards in just 1:57.

The teams would be scoreless in the third quarter before Buena Vista started to mount their comeback in the beginning of the fourth. The Beavers moved to within one point of Peru State on a five yard TD that finished off a 10 play, 62 yard drive. Peru State blocked the extra point to cling to a one point lead with 13:05 remaining in the game. The Beavers would get the final score of the game as they capped off a nine play 56 yard drive with a 22 yard field goal to secure a 16-14 victory.

Peru finished the game with 251 total yards on 76 plays. Buena Vista was 264 yards on 73 plays. The Bobcats had 188 yards in the air on 15 of 35 with two interceptions from Quarter Back Curtis Thompson. On the ground, the Cats were held to only 63 yards rushing on 41 attempts. Peru State had seven turnovers in the game that were costly in the lost as they fumbled four times, losing all of them and throwing three interceptions. Preston Bruss led the Bobcats on the defensive side of the ball as three of his tackles were for losses. NAIA Independent Player of the Week, Ryan Newell aided in the Cats cause with 12 tackles, one interception and one sack.

Peru State will return to action next weekend at the Oak Bowl as they host Sterling College on Hall of Fame weekend. Kick-off will be set for 1pm in Peru, NE.
