Ms. Shields has taught voice for more than fifteen years in various settings and institutions including the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Lincoln, College of Saint Mary in Omaha and Peru State College. At the College of Saint Mary she was Director of Music and also team taught courses in combined liberal art disciplines including World Music and Finding Your Voice with anthropologist John Whitehouse. Other classes included History of the American Musical, Music Appreciation, and a Humanities class on Art and Music.
Other experiences include teaching elementary and junior high school music as well as a 10 year stint as family counselor and public school teacher consultant. She has directed several choirs in the area. These include the College of Saint Mary choir and First Unitarian church choir. She was also a ten year member of the Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, a professional choir from the Omaha area.
Ms. Shields is nearing completion of a Doctorate of Musical Arts in vocal performance from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She also holds a Masters Degree in vocal performance from UNL and a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Nebraska in Omaha. Her bachelors degree is from Tarkio College.
Ms. Shields has collaborated on numerous projects in her professional career as performer. Her greatest interest is in combining historic art works with performance of vocal works, notably the work of the Impressionists and French Mélodie. This has lead to several collaborations at the Joslyn Art Museum with traveling French Art exhibits.
Other projects include performance collaborations with Brigit Saint Brigit Theater in Omaha and many recitals with area instrumental ensembles. Two recent performances include Ravel’s Chanson madécasses with Omaha Symphony members and soloist for Bach’s Sleepers Awake under the baton of Jerry Brabec and the Omaha Conservatory of Music.
Ms. Shields is actively involved with NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), attending seminars, engaging her students in contests, and adjudicating at these contests.
